Program Topic: The Magic Shutter Speed by Keith S Walklet

Most of us are familiar with "being in the groove."

Golfers enjoy the perfect swing. Tennis players love to hit the ball with the sweet spot of the racquet. Singers celebrate perfect pitch.

IPW member, Keith S. Walklet, revels in the photographic Magic Shutter Speed.

"Contemporary cameras can easily freeze the motion of a waterfall or raging river. But is that what you want?" asks Keith.

"I find I rarely like the look of subjects "frozen" by a fast shutter speed, especially things that are normally fluid. More often, it is partially blurred subjects that intrigue me. By partially blurring the motion, it is possible to capture the feeling of actually witnessing the flexing muscles of athletes, the speed of a running horse, the pulses, undulations, crashes, twists and swirls of water.

So how does one know what shutter speed to use to get a desired effect?"

Join Keith as he takes a look at how we perceive motion so you can understand the advantage of using slower shutter speeds. That is, afterall, where the photographic magic lies.

Show us your work

After the program portion, share your images (5 digital or 5 prints) to share or be open to review/feedback.  For your digital images (min size 1024 x 768 pixels), bring your Flash Drive or CD/DVD for projection.
